My Story

Hey, I’m Julia, Tender & Grant Specialist

Even in my teenage years, I had a passion for helping people. I just didn’t know how I would.

To find my path, I went to university to become a Welfare Worker and started my first full-time role as an Adolescent Family Counsellor.

I loved it and thought this would be my path, helping young people overcome challenges such as mental health, substance abuse, homelessness, or difficult family situations to make major positive changes in their lives.

But then I was thrown into my first ever funding application, which pulled the rug out from under me.

I felt a lot of pressure to get it right whilst also still seeing clients. I procrastinated, just hoping the right words would magically appear!

Luckily, it wasn’t for core funding because I struggled with anxiety and time. It was a steep learning curve and not like anything I’d ever done before.

Do you ever feel like this when a tender or grant hits your desk?

I made so many mistakes and ultimately was unsuccessful. After this first failure, I did heaps of googling, reading and talking to others so I could get better. Tenders and grants were how our service survived and continued to support young people, so I had to figure this out.

I learnt quickly that I needed to develop a repeatable strategy, figure out how to read and understand all the documents, and develop win themes.

For the next 5 years, I wrote tenders and grants alongside my youth work, with growing success, but each time I got better and had more success.

For 20 years, I worked with some amazing non-profits helping people, but I loved managing the tender process so much that after a discussion with my girlfriend, I started looking for a new role.

I accepted a newly created Tender Coordinator role for a regional training organisation where I found the opportunities and managed the submission of high-quality responses. I collaborated with diverse subject experts in areas such as Environmental, Engineering, Health, Training, Business, WHS, Defence, etc.

After an organisational merger, I developed and managed the tender data collection system state-wide and was often the lead Tender Writer. Our Tender Team found outstanding success with an 83% return on the organisation’s investment.

I loved producing quality writing to a timeline and even to the strict word counts.

I was loving the new challenge!

I’d developed a great Expression of Interest for an exciting new pilot program. The CEO and my Manager had approved my responses for submission.

But on the closing day I had internet issues. I spent 4 hours trying to upload the response. The dreaded wheel kept spinning, but I couldn’t get the documents to upload.

I had that sinking feeling in my stomach…

Eventually, the clock ticked down… I missed it. The tender closed, and I didn’t get the tender submitted.

I swore this would never happen again (and it hasn’t). I developed systems and strategies to make sure.

When the next major tender came along, I was ready.

We were invited to tender for 22 new services in 6 weeks. As the Lead Submission Coordinator, I oversaw a team of 4, as well as completing 9 tenders myself. We submitted all tenders early and were successful in gaining new services in new areas.

Once again, life took another turn when the organisation launched a major restructure

My job would not exist and I had to figure out what I was going to do…

There were moments of sheer panic, sleepless nights, and self-doubt.

I suddenly woke up one morning thinking, “OMG, maybe I could work for myself, and still help people!”

When I tentatively raised the idea with my girlfriend, she supported it 100%.

At this point, I should mention my girlfriend had been suggesting I start my own business for YEARS BUT I’d been clinging to the comfort of an incoming paycheque and not taking risks.

Knowing I was going to be out of work in 6 months was the final push I needed.

I wanted to create a business that was authentic to me and my passions but still gave me the freedom to explore this amazing country of ours, Australia.

Initially, I started a content and social media marketing service. But I went back to my passion and skills in writing tenders and grants and associated documents for businesses and organisations that have a mission.

After writing grants and tenders for over 20 years, I love helping business and organisations make an impact with their services and products. I connect with my client’s cause in helping develop tender and grant responses. Even having the chance to read their impact statements and testimonials is immensely rewarding.

I start work every morning with a renewed sense of meaning and motivation, knowing I’m helping to support your service into something even better.

Tenders, Submissions, Bids or Grants… whatever term you use; they involve a lot of work.

The problem is there are only 24 hours in a day, and when you’ve got a tender or grant to complete, I know the day can feel a lot shorter.

Are You Struggling to Get it All Done?

I love writing tenders and grants supporting mission driven businesses, organisations and individuals. By developing winning grants and tenders, I help people just like you achieve their ideas and make an impact.

If you’re highly aware of the potential of tenders and grants, have big dreams and are passionate about changing the world with your business, we should have a chat because I would love to help you.

I offer a range of solutions to support your tendering at any stage of the process, from assessing your readiness to full bid management.
